Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov (Jossey-Bass, 2010). This book was featured in The New York Times Magazine on March 7, 2010 and has been in the top 100 books (of ALL books, not just education books) on Amazon. What makes this book stand out is Doug Lemov?s keen observations of top teachers and his ability to break down what they do into concrete techniques that all teachers can put into practice. For a summery of the book, go to http://media.wiley.com/assets/3006/21/TeachLikeAChampion_TheMainIdea.pdf Yes, Virginia, There is a Difference and Your Students are Being Left Behind ? this article was featured in the November newsletter, but the link was left off. Here?s the link http://www.edweek.org/media/leinwand-blog.pdf Need some technology training? Texas Instruments announces free T3 webinar series for math. Experienced educators with math and science backgrounds present the webinars. The series features live and on-demand sessions where educators can learn how to effectively use TI technology to build understanding of math and science concepts. The webinars also show teachers how to take advantage of the many other free resources that TI offers. All webinars are about one hour long and are recorded for on-demand viewing later. ?Certificates of Attendance? will be available to conference participants. Preview a summary at: http://www.vanguardnyc.net/foodforthought/mainidea031410.pdf Instructional Shift #4: Incorporate math vocabulary through language-rich discussions. In math, students? problems often arise not from a lack of understanding of the concepts, but from a misunderstanding of the terms and vocabulary. This problem is only exacerbated with English language learners. For example, how many times have your students confused the words ?area? and ?perimeter?? They might fully understand the concept, but often get the two mixed up. This confusion only gets worse in the later grades. ?The projection of a leg onto the hypotenuse of a right triangle is the mean proportion between the entire hypotenuse and the length of the projection of the leg onto the hypotenuse.? Projection? Mean? Hypotenuse? Even a simple sentence such as, ?Write two 2-digit numbers on your paper? can be confusing for English language learners. The solution is to include rich discussions in your classroom that include relevant mathematical vocabulary. Students need to be bombarded with key mathematical terms both orally and in writing. These terms must be used over and over again, in context, and be linked to familiar words in order for them to be internalized. So what should we see in an effective math classroom? ? An ongoing emphasis on the use and meaning of mathematical terms, including their definitions and their connections to real-world entities and/or pictures. ? Student and teacher explanations that make frequent and precise use of mathematics terms, vocabulary, and notation. ? An extensive use of word walls that capture the key terms and vocabulary with pictures when appropriate and in English as well as Spanish when appropriate. Are you an experienced educator who is ready to make a difference in education policy on a national scale? If so, consider applying for an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship and prepare for a year of unique opportunities. As an Einstein Fellow, you will spend a school year in Washington, DC sharing your expertise with policy makers. You may serve your Fellowship with one of several government agency sponsors such as the Department of Energy, NASA, the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or in the office of a member of Congress. The deadline to apply is January 5, 2012. Visit www.einsteinfellows.org for more information. eCYBERMISSION Heading into its 10th year, eCYBERMISSION is a free, web-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics competition for students in grades six through nine. Your students can compete against other students in their grades for state, regional, and national awards. Teams consisting of 3 ? 4 students and a team advisor would work to solve problems in their community utilizing the scientific method, scientific inquiry or engineering design process and can win at the state, regional and national levels. To date, more than $8.5 million has been awarded to students throughout the country with more to be awarded in 2012. Deadline to register is December 16, 2011. For more information, go to: www.ecybermission.com Calling on students to join Siemens ?We Can Change the World? Challenge. Responsibility for tomorrow?s most daunting environmental problems will fall to the youth of today ? the very people creating some of the most inspired solutions. Helping generate these solutions is the national sustainability challenge for k ? 12 students, the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge. Through the challenge, students team up with classmates under teacher/mentors to solve environmental problems in their school (grades k ? 5), community (grades 6 ? 8), and world (grades 9 ? 12). Now entering its fourth year, the challenge is a collaborative effort of the Siemens Foundation, Discovery Education, the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), and the College Board. Students at all levels use scientific investigation and web-based curriculum tools powered by Discovery Education to create a replicable green solution. Nearly 18,000 elementary, middle, and high school students competed in last year?s challenge, offering innovations in areas such as food-waste-to-energy, community-scale battery recycling, phantom-power load reduction, systematic behavior change, erosion control, wildlife habitat restoration, and sustainable agriculture for arid zones. Deadline to submit projects is March 15, 2012. See www.wecanchange.com for more information and to add your student team. We are trying to get this information to teacher prior to the holiday break, so they will be able to plan and prepare their schedules. 1). In order to teach the math CCSS for 9th grade, teachers need to attend the summer math academy (this summer we will focus on MS teachers - an academy for HS teachers will be offered during the 2013 summer) 2). The dates for this academy are June 11th through the 14th 3). Teachers will be compensated their hourly rate - because attendance at this summer academy is a requirement of their employment 4). Due to the lack of available texts that are fully aligned with the core for 9th grade, we have convened a 9th grade transition team that will be developing consumable workbooks for all 9th grade students (thank you to the diligent teachers who are serving on this team - their work is important and appreciated) Please let me or Allison Duncan know if you have any questions. Thanks for all you do - and please be sure to share this information with your math teachers prior to the holiday break. Have a great day!
