Preparation for the State Science Meetings 2019-20
In preparation for the 2019-20 school year, we wanted to share information with you about meetings and events currently planned to help support science instruction in your districts and charter schools.

Save the Dates for SSECC

State Science Education Coordinating Committee (SSECC) Meetings are intended for district and charter school science leaders to work together to help support good science teaching and learning and SEEd standards implementation throughout the state. We invite every LEA to have representatives at these meetings, and will almost always have breakout times from Elementary Science and Secondary Science so if you represent a district or a K-12 charter it may be good to have two representatives at each meeting, one for elementary and one for secondary. The 2019-20 School Year SSECC Meetings are scheduled for:

  * September 20, 2019 at the Utah State Board of Education in Salt Lake City (tentatively - 8:30am - 3:30pm)
  * January 24, 2020 at the Utah State Board of Education in Salt Lake City (tentatively - 8:30am - 3:30pm)
  * April 3, 2020 at the Utah State Board of Education in Salt Lake City (tentatively - 8:30am - 3:30pm)

Webinars

We are thinking about starting state webinars that would occur every month. Through webinars, we are thinking we can focus our time hearing from national leaders on science education, getting updates about Utah districts and schools implementation of SEEd Standards, or other relevant topics that can help you in the work you're doing. To help us gauge your interest we are looking to spend time talking about this in our first SSECC meeting. Please come prepared to talk about what you want to hear about, who you would like to hear from, and when would be best for these webinars to occur.

SEEd Standards Implementation Plan

We are working on a DRAFT State Implementation Plan for the SEEd Standards to help teachers, districts/charters, and USBE identify their role in successful planning for statewide implementation of SEEd Standards in the 2020-21 school year. This plan is scheduled to go before the Utah State Board of Education for approval in August. Following approval, it will be shared out to SSECC and will be discussed in our September Meeting.

Welcome Melissa
In May of 2019, the USBE STEM team welcomed Melissa Mendenhall as our new USBE Elementary Science/STEM Education Specialist. Melissa has been working in the Alpine School District as their Elementary Specialist and helped support their 6th Grade teachers in their implementation of the 6th Grade SEEd Standards. She comes with a wealth of experience and is excited to help you support your elementary teachers.

We are looking to ensure that we have contact information for as many science leaders as possible. If you are receiving this email and no longer serve as a science specialist in your district or charter, please reply to this email letting us know who does fill the position. Also, forward this email to that person.

NSTA Regional Conference and Workshops
Science Teachers and Leaders,

The National Science Teachers Association is hosting one of their Regional Conferences in Salt Lake City from October 24-26. With this conference comes outstanding professional learning opportunities for K-12 science teachers, especially in preparation for the newly adopted Science with Engineering Education (SEEd) Standards for grades K-5 and High School.

NSTA Regional Conference - https://s6.goeshow.com/nsta/area/2019saltlake/overview.cfm
The conference lasts 3 days (Thursday to Saturday) and includes daily keynote addresses and hundreds of breakout session options. The conference program App allows you to search for sessions that focus on your needs in elementary or secondary or maybe in a specific science content area of interest. To Register for the Salt Lake City Regional NSTA Conference go to - https://s6.goeshow.com/nsta/area/2019saltlake/registration_form.cfm
Currently, NSTA is offering a Group Registration Deal where you "register four attendees and get a complimentary 5th registration" (I'm not sure how long this is going to last). To help you plan for costs to attend, here is some information:
- NSTA Membership - $80 (comes with your choice of NSTA Journal for the year)
- Conference Registration (For NSTA Members)
o Register by Sept 13 $195
o Register by Oct 4 $205
o Register after Oct 4 $240
- Conference Registration (For Non-NSTA Members)
o Register by Sept 13 $290
o Register by Oct 4 $300
o Register after Oct 4 $330

NSTA Conference Workshops - https://www.nsta.org/conferences/ngss.aspx
Another option, if you want a more focused and structured form of learning from national leaders in Science Education, is to sign up for a NSTA Conference Workshop. They are a more expensive than the conference itself and include conference registration but include a fully immerse learning experience. One I might recommend if you are new to SEEd Standards and the idea of 3 Dimensional science teaching and learning is called Making Sense of Three-Dimensional Teaching and Learning Workshop in Salt Lake City<https://www.nsta.org/conferences/ngss.aspx>. The description sounds like it would help you get started on the right foot and improve the science teaching and learning happening in your classroom. This workshop is scheduled all day for Friday and Saturday, so you would be able to attend the conference like everyone on Thursday and then you would be in the workshop on Friday and Saturday. To help you plan for costs to attend, here is some information:
- NSTA Membership - $80 (comes with your choice of NSTA Journal for the year)
- Workshop Registration (For NSTA Members)
o Register by Sept 13 $500
o Register after 9/13 $575
- Workshop Registration (For Non-NSTA Members)
o Register by Sept 13 $575
o Register after 9/13 $650

As you can see registration deadlines are important, be sure to register early.
