The summary of yesterday's board meeting is below.  Of particular note is the status of standards currently in process:

*         The Educational Leadership Standards are released for 90 days of public review. We will send a link soon where you can provide electronic feedback.

*         The Early Childhood Standards are in the process of being written.

*         The K-5, 9-12 Science Standards have been opened.  That process begins with the Standards Review Committee composed of parents and science experts. If you have recommendations for involvement, please contact Ricky Scott or me.

If you have any questions, please let me know and we can also discuss details at the curriculum director's meeting next Wednesday.

Highlights
In its November 2 meeting, the Utah State Board of Education (USBE):

  *   Advanced Utah Educational Leadership Standards for public review and began  the process for updating both the state's K-5 and 9-12 Science Standards and Early Childhood Core Standards.
  *   Voted to suspend a statewide writing assessment for grades 9-10 for the 2017-18 school year.
  *   Began looking at potential statutory change requests for the upcoming Utah legislative session.

Board advances science, early childhood, effective leadership standards
The Utah State Board of Education voted to:

  *   Open the K-5 and 9-12 Science Standards<http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/usbe/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AS7RTF6F122A> to begin a revision process.
  *   Approve recommendations from a review committee and take the next step in the review process of Early Childhood Core Standards<http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/usbe/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AS7RT66F0705>.
  *   Release proposed Utah Educational Leadership Standards<http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/usbe/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AS7RSP6EF78A> for a 90-day public review.




Standards revision process approved
The Utah State Board of Education approved a process for adopting new standards<http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/usbe/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AS7RSV6EFD59> for non-core courses not governed by state statute or administrative rule.

Writing assessment for grades 9-10 suspended for 2017-18 school year
The Utah State Board of Education clarified that there will be no statewide writing assessment for grades 9-10 in the 2017-18 school year.

Updated Testing Ethics policy approved

Board looks at potential statutory change requests for Utah Legislature

Board gives final approval to five administrative rules changes
The Utah State Board of Education gave final approval to the following administrative rule changes:

  *   R277-621 District of Residence<http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/usbe/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AS7RQ36EBD38>. This new rule dealing with requests for alternative district of residency is being created in response to changes in state law<https://le.utah.gov/~2017/bills/static/HB0125.html>.
  *   R277-491-4 School Community Councils - School Community Council Principal Responsibility<http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/usbe/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AS7RQV6ECCF0>. This rule is being amended to clarify the duties of a school principal on the community council.
  *   R277-469 Instructional Materials Commission Operating Procedures<http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/usbe/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AS7RR96ED2D9>. This rule is being amended to clarify book depository provisions.
  *   R277-515 Utah Professional Standards<http://www.boarddocs.com/ut/usbe/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AS7RRK6ED826>. This rule is being amended for clarification. The Board also voted to return this rule to the Law and Licensing Committee in December for further potential amendment.
