Subject: Clarification Change Made to Science High School Graduation Requirements

Curriculum Directors,

I wanted to make all of you aware of changes made today by the State Board of Education to board rule R277-700-6 for science high school graduation requirements. After the change made in October 2015 with the addition of 3 computer science courses as approved options for 1.0 credit of the required 2.0 foundational science credits there were some ambiguities and confusion about which courses would count as foundational in the areas of biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics.

There were two main changes made to the board rule:

1. The rule now states that the 2.0 foundation credits must be from two different science areas

2. The rule now lists the science courses approved for foundation science credit in each science area

To see the changes in the board rule please see the attached file.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please understand that these changes do not affect Juniors or Seniors who may not currently meet the new requirement of 2.0 science foundation credits from two different science areas. The changes are meant for Sophomores and Freshman that still have reasonable time to meet the requirements with future scheduling.

If you have any questions please let me know.
