[Curriculum Directors] PD Course: Language and Cognitive Characteristics of English Learners with and without Disabilities

Dear Educator,

You are invited to attend a training session on the Language and Cognitive Characteristics of English Learners (ELs) with and without disabilities, cosponsored by the Utah State Office of Education Special Education and English Learner Departments.

This professional development will provide insight into the language and linguistic characteristics of EL students as well as the cognitive characteristics that are often confused with learning disabilities.  Information on strategies, interventions and identification of students with learning disabilities will also be discussed.

The target audience for this professional development is administrators, special education and EL teachers, instructional coaches, speech language pathologists, school psychologists and school teams working with EL students.  Content teachers are also welcome.

This meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 from 8:30 - 4:00 pm at the Utah State Library-250 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84116-Multi-Purpose Room.

*        Participants will receive the book Sheltered Content Instruction: Teacher English Language Learners with Diverse Abilities by Jana J. Echevarria.

*        Reimbursements for lodging, up to $95 will be provided for attendees who must travel over 50 miles one way to attend. (All travel and lodging arrangements are the responsibility of individual educators, schools, or districts.)

*        Re-licensure points are available.
