All School Counselors,
Please read the important message below by the State CTE Director, Thalea Longhurst, and Business & Marketing Specialist, Laura deShazo:

Computer Technology will be moved to the 8th grade... a long awaited decision has been made by the Utah School Board of Education.

Districts, Charters to Move Computer Technology Course to Eighth Grade

Utah currently requires students complete a half-year credit of computer technology sometime between ninth and 12th grades. Following a review of the Board's Digital Literacy report, the Board voted last Friday to require districts and charter school move that course requirement to eighth grade by no later than fiscal year 2019.

The current 0.5 Educational Technology credit in the 9th - 12th grade will also remain, now to be called Digital Studies. The Digital Studies course options will be determined and announced in the coming months. The Computer Technology course will remain active until fiscal year 2019, then it will be moved to an inactive status. For districts that have already implemented the 8th grade Digital Literacy course, this will currently count and students will then take a course from the approved list. This will insure a smooth transition for those districts that have currently adopted the Digital Literacy course currently.

The current test out option for Computer Technology 9-12th grade, Certiport's IC3 GS4<http://www.certiport.com/Portal/desktopdefault.aspx?page=common/pagelibrary/IC3_Certifications_GS4.html>, will move to the 8th grade test out option for Digital Literacy.

Keyboarding in the elementary level was also discussed, but requirements and expectations will remain the same until future notice.

We appreciate your patience and willingness to move the pendulum in the right direction. If you have any questions or concerns, please send them to either Thalea or Laura.
